Ferny Hills windows, made just up the road in Brendale

Ferny Hills is roughly a 12 km drive from our factory at 241 Leitchs Road, Brendale, via South Pine Road and Eatons Crossing Road. Our fleet runs the Pine Rivers and North Brisbane corridor on regular routes, so a Ferny Hills measure slots into runs we already drive. Every window we fit in the suburb is made at that same Brendale factory and installed by our own crews.

Why Ferny Hills chooses custom aluminium glass windows

Ferny Hills and Superior Glass share a start date. The suburb was gazetted in 1972, after the first subdivisions went in through the 1960s. We started trading the same year. Fifty years on, many of the suburb’s windows are still the ones that went in when the house was built.

That matters because of what Ferny Hills is built from. The suburb is known for its 1970s and 80s chamferboard and brick homes, on blocks of roughly 600 to 800 square metres. Frames from that era were early aluminium or steel. Steel rusts and early aluminium pits. Tracks and rollers seize with them. And the glass in those frames is nearly always a single pane.

Single glazing is a noise problem here. Samford Road and Patricks Road carry the suburb’s traffic, and the Ferny Grove rail line serves the station in neighbouring Ferny Grove. A double-glazed unit puts two panes and a sealed air gap between you and that noise, and the same gap slows heat moving through the glass. Homes that got double glazing early can face a different fault: when the edge seal fails, moisture creeps into the gap and the unit fogs from the inside.

There’s a compliance layer too. AS 1288, the Australian standard for glass in buildings, requires Grade A safety glass in human-impact areas, including window glazing with sills lower than 500 mm above the floor. Plenty of low windows on the suburb’s sloping blocks were glazed decades before that rule, so they still hold ordinary glass. We check sill heights at the measure and quote safety glass where the standard calls for it.

Our answer to all of it starts with a tape measure. Every window is made to the measured opening at our Brendale factory, roughly 12 km away, so an out-of-square 1972 opening gets a window built for it rather than a stock size packed out to fit. Our installers hold Cert III in Glass and Glazing and Cert III in Carpentry, so the timber around the frame gets sorted by the same crew that fits the glass. The measure and quote is free.

Common window problems we solve in Ferny Hills

Cutting traffic and rail noise with double glazing

Most original Ferny Hills windows hold one pane of glass, and the suburb's traffic runs along Samford Road and Patricks Road, with the Ferny Grove rail line serving the station in the neighbouring suburb. A single pane passes that noise almost straight through. Bedrooms facing the main roads never get properly quiet with one pane of glass in the frame. We replace single-glazed windows with double-glazed units made at our Brendale factory; the sealed gap between the two panes cuts outside noise and slows heat transfer at the same time.

Failed or foggy double-glazed units

A double-glazed unit relies on the seal around its edge spacer. When that seal fails with age, moist air leaks into the gap and condenses on the inside faces of the glass. The fog sits between the panes where no cloth can reach it, and the unit loses part of its insulating value. We measure the failed unit and manufacture a replacement at Brendale, or quote a full new window if the frame is at the end of its life too.

Corroded original aluminium or steel window frames

First-generation aluminium and steel frames in the suburb's 1970s and 80s homes have taken five decades of Queensland weather. Steel rusts and early aluminium pits, so sashes bind and tracks seize. A corroded frame leaks air and water, and new glass alone won't bring it back. We replace the complete window, frame included, built to the measured opening. Our installers' Cert III Carpentry trade covers timber repairs around the reveal, so one crew handles the lot.

Safety glass at low sills (AS 1288)

Many Ferny Hills windows were glazed in the 1970s, long before the current standard. AS 1288 now requires Grade A safety glass where window sills sit lower than 500 mm above floor level. Low glazing sits in the human-impact zone the standard exists to protect. We check sill heights during the free on-site measure and glaze replacements with toughened or laminated safety glass where the standard requires it.

Architectural glass windows in Ferny Hills

Some Ferny Hills projects call for windows that carry the design of the whole room, and searches for architectural glass windows in Ferny Hills usually mean exactly that: full-height glass, banks of louvres, glazing turned around a corner, or sizes no catalogue carries. We build that work from our standard window types. Every window is made to your measured width and height, including non-standard sizing, so a renovation drawing doesn't have to bend to stock dimensions. Louvre banks use Breezeway blades in Vantage aluminium frames, sized bay by bay. Frame colours, finishes and glass types are chosen per job. Because fabrication happens at our own Brendale factory, a one-off design is treated like any other order: measured on site, then built to that measure and fitted by our crews.

Why Ferny Hills trusts Superior Glass

Superior Glass has traded since 1972, family owned, with director Nathan Fox still hands-on in the day-to-day. We manufacture what we install. Windows are made at our 1,700 sqm factory and showroom at 241 Leitchs Road, Brendale, then fitted by our own crews. Those installers hold Cert III in Glass and Glazing and Cert III in Carpentry, and the business is QBCC licensed and insured. We supply and install Vantage aluminium window systems and Breezeway louvre blades. Window installations carry our workmanship guarantee. Quotes are free and include an on-site measure. A service fleet covers North Brisbane and the Pine Rivers corridor on regular runs from Brendale, so a Ferny Hills window is measured, made, delivered and fitted by one company.
