Aspley doors, made just up the road in Brendale

Aspley sits at the southern end of our regular run out of Brendale. The factory and showroom at 241 Leitchs Road is roughly 8 to 9 km away, a short drive via South Pine Road and Gympie Road. Our service fleet covers North Brisbane and the Pine Rivers corridor, so an Aspley measure or install slots into a regular local run.

Why Aspley chooses custom aluminium glass doors

A door opening cut in 1965 has had six decades to move. Timber frames shrink. Footings settle, and the brickwork above the opening moves with them. In postwar openings of this age, the width at the top corner and the width at the bottom corner often disagree. A stock door from a hardware chain assumes a square hole. These houses rarely have one.

Aspley is a settled suburb, and the numbers show it. Of its 5,463 private dwellings, 72.1% are stand-alone houses, 3,662 homes in all. Most date from the subdivision boom that started in 1952 near Gympie and Robinson Roads and filled the suburb with low-set brick homes through the 1960s and 70s. That puts the original doors and windows at 55 to 70 years old, and they tend to fail together: worn sills, stiff rollers, perished seals, and single glazing that does little for traffic noise near Gympie Road.

This is why we build doors to measure rather than selling from a catalogue. Every Aspley door we fit is fabricated at our own factory in Brendale. The frame is cut from the opening’s on-site dimensions, taken as it stands today, not to a nominal stock size. Because the same crew is trade-certified in both glazing and carpentry, they can correct a leaning jamb or pack a dropped sill before the new door goes in.

The rules matter too. Widen one of these openings into a larger sliding or stacking span and AS 2047, the standard for external glazed doors, brings a wind-load rating into the job, set by the pressure the site can see. AS 1288 sets the glass itself: any door has to be glazed in Grade A safety glass, toughened or laminated. Building the frame to the measured opening, not a stock size, leaves room to meet both the wind rating and the glass grade the job requires.

If your windows are going at the same time as your doors, and at this age most are, we handle both. The window half of the job is covered on our Aspley aluminium windows page.

Common door problems we solve in Aspley

Hinged aluminium entrance door replacement

Most of Aspley's houses were built as low-set brick homes in the 1960s and 70s, and many still carry their original front doors. After five or six decades, an entrance door sags on its hinges and no longer seals against the jamb. A front door you have to shoulder open is a daily annoyance, and the gaps around it let in weather and dust. Our architectural range replaces it with a hinged aluminium entrance door or custom entry panel, made to your opening in single, double, or multi-panel form with your pick of hardware.

Out-of-square openings needing custom fabrication

Houses built in the 1950s to 70s have had decades to settle, so jambs lean and sills drop until no two measurements across the opening agree. Force a stock-size door into that hole and you get binding rollers and a frame under permanent stress. We build the door at Brendale to fit the opening as it actually sits, so the frame is not carrying the stress of a hole it was never sized for, and the rollers run true instead of binding. Because the crew works across glazing and carpentry, a drifted opening gets brought back to true during the fit rather than worked around.

Water getting in at door sills during storms

On older doors the sill has often settled off level and the seals have perished, so wind-driven rain in a summer storm finds its way under the track. Water at the sill soaks flooring and the timber sub-frame, and that damage spreads well past the doorway. The new door and its sill are made at Brendale to match the opening, then the crew beds and seals the sill dead level on the day, so storm water runs off instead of pooling against the timber sub-frame.

Wind-load compliance on wide door openings

AS 2047 ties an external glazed door to a wind-load rating set by its site, and the wider the sliding or stacking span, the higher the pressure that rating has to cover, which pushes the frame and glass specification up with it. A wide glass door that hasn't been specified for the site's wind pressure is a compliance problem and a real risk in a Queensland storm. Because each door is fabricated to its own measured span at Brendale rather than pulled from stock, the frame and glass can be specified to the wind rating the site actually calls for. On the glass, AS 1288 is what puts toughened or laminated Grade A safety glass into a door.

Architectural glass doors in Aspley

Architectural glass doors are the front-of-house side of our range: hinged aluminium entrance doors, entry doors, and custom entry panels for homes and commercial properties. Panels come in single, double, or multi-panel configurations, with your choice of handles, locks, hinges, and privacy options. We build these installations on Breezeway and Vantage systems, and doors can integrate the ComfortEdge system, which is designed to cut heat transfer through the door and steady indoor temperatures. For shops and offices, commercial architectural doors carry commercial-grade hardware and hinges rated for high-traffic use. On a 1960s Aspley brick home, a hinged aluminium entrance door usually replaces a worn original front door, and the custom panel work means the new door fits the opening you actually have. See the full architectural door range for details.

Why Aspley trusts Superior Glass

Superior Glass has been making and fitting glass doors since 1972. We're Australian family-owned, and director Nathan Fox still works in the business day to day. We manufacture and we install: doors are made at our own 1,700 sqm factory and showroom at 241 Leitchs Road, Brendale, then fitted by our own crews. Those installers hold Cert III in Glass and Glazing and Cert III in Carpentry, working to NSSA-compliant standards. We're QBCC licensed and insured; the QBCC requires that licence for any paid glass and glazing work in Queensland, including fabricating and installing doors. Once a door is measured and made, fitting it usually takes a day or two on site. If you want a security screen door over the new glass, we supply and install Prowler Proof and Crimsafe screens, listed at /security-screens-brisbane/, on the same job, so one contractor handles both.
